Psalm 45:11

He is Lord

Isn’t this a powerful statement, “Let the king be enthralled by your beauty?” No doubt, the queen-to-be is a stunning looking woman, she is being encouraged to not hold back, to let her natural attractions be fully visible to her new husband, to woo him with her loveliness, probably in the bed chamber. I guess he already had some inkling of this, or he would not want to marry her!

However, the verse has something more serious to teach us. Look at these words, “Honour him, for he is your lord.”  This literally means to worship him or pay homage to him. The meaning is to get down on one’s knee and touch the forehead to the ground at the feet of someone of royal rank. It might surprise you to know that this expression is sometimes used of people greeting Jesus, it was a common mark of respect. When the Samaritan woman said to the Lord in John 4:20, “Our fathers worshipped on this mountain,” she didn’t just mean that they held services there. Worship and paying homage was a sign of one’s respect and humility before He who was greater. It was a declaration of status but also of reverence.

In our age, it is argued by the most vociferous ,that men and women are deemed to be equals, genders and nationalities are equals, there are no classes, no divisions – all are equal. That philosophy takes us into the realm of “rights” and the “woke” culture of our day that demands fiercely for everyone to be whatever they want to be. While the argument rages, there are more victims of abuse, division and unkindness than there have every been! Whatever the rights and wrongs of our society I know someone to whom I am happy to make obeisance. Perhaps we are all too “familiar’ in the presence of our King at times. Maybe we need to just step back and remember that homage / worship is meant to put everyone in their rightful place? And who better to worship and bow down before, than the King of kings and Lord of lords? Our bridegroom!
