Psalm 29:11

Psalm 29:11

The peace of the Lord

And so another of David’s Psalms draws to a close. A Psalm where we have witnessed overwhelming power and majesty as the voice of our God thunders across the surface of the planet. A Psalm pulsating with energy as the lightning strike of God speaking down to the earth, is met by the energy force of creation responding with glory; like the positive energy coming up from the earth, mentioned in verse 7.

This song of David is meant to excite us, to remove any preconceived ideas we may have of some distant, ineffective deity. Our God is not silent, He is not powerless, He is not detached. The Lord is active, He is more powerful than any known phenomena on the planet and His voice roars across the nations in demonstration of His imminence. Our God is involved and fully operational, particularly where His people are concerned. Those who believe in Him and serve Him will experience His strength. If He can do all that the Psalm proclaims, just by speaking, just to demonstrate His presence, then you can be sure that He will look after those who honour and obey Him.

The final promise is of peace. It is important to understand what peace means here. Let us use David as an example; during his lifetime he saw peace come to the land of his heritage. All enemies were pushed back, all hostile forces where overcome and the land of Israel became peaceful and the people turned their attention to agriculture and their festivals; to family and domestic life. However, they still had an army and they still faced battles beyond their borders, for enemies were all around them. I think that kind of peace is the best we can hope for in this world. Peace with God in our hearts, peace within our families and in our own inheritance and peace in our churches. However, the borders must be guarded, the enemy never departs, the battles will always continue outside and beyond those boundaries. It is here that the Lord gives strength to His people.

Thank You Lord for reminding us of Your power and supernatural abilities. Thank You for showing us that these demonstrations of might are sent to remind us of who You are and what You are capable of. We are in awe of You. Thank You that creation praises You, although with groans that will one day become songs of praise. Help us to understand our place in this creation but to also give You Your rightful place in our lives, as God. Help us also, to hear Your voice when You speak, be it in natural phenomena or that still small whisper within. Thank You that You are never silent. Amen.
