Psalm 25:13

Psalm 25:13
Days of Prosperity?
We’ve all heard of “prosperity ministry.” Promoted by American TV evangelists it promises riches and wealth for those who follow the Lord, whose primary goal, it seems to them, is to enhance our status and our enjoyment of this world. That is a far cry from the “suffering for Christ” ministry engaged in by men like the apostles Peter and Paul. Here is how Paul views such things: -
But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. 1 Timothy 6:6-10.
So, what does David mean when he talks here in the Psalm about, “They will spend their days in prosperity?” We need to understand the background. He is talking about the nation of Israel and those who have settled themselves in the land promised to them by the Lord. They have fought to establish its boundaries and have divided it between their 12 tribes. They have learned to farm the land and have built settlements and a culture based on their faith in God. The Lord promises to bless their crops and their herds and to keep them safe so long as they obey His commands. (See Deuteronomy 28.) If they disobey, they will be cursed and lose their God-given prosperity.
This is all a picture for us, for our land, our hope, is not in this world. It has nothing to do with real estate and bank balances, in fact we are aliens here. Our city is heavenly, our inheritance is heavenly, our treasure is in heaven and in this world we may end up with nothing. The battles we fight are not for acres or hectares but for spiritual ground that cannot be measured. However, the rewards that await us far outweigh healthy bank balances and the bricks and mortar of earthly prosperity. Thank God that He will prosper us and that our descendants will inherit His land if we fear and reverence Him. Hallelujah!
