Psalm 18:38
Destroying the enemy!
“I crushed them so that they could not rise; they fell beneath my feet.” This language may seem brutal and gruesome, here is no Geneva Convention or UN Charter of human rights. This is all about ethnic cleansing, about complete victory and the absolute destruction of the enemy. And David gloats in it and David recognises the hand of God in his triumphs over his enemies. How, as Christians, do we make sense of this?
Firstly, we need to remember that from the time Abraham was granted the land of Canaan under promise, to its occupation by the Israelites was over 400 years. There was plenty of time for the pagan nations to repent and to acknowledge the God of Israel. Their vile practices and their evil idol worship was no mystical philosophy; these people were violent, depraved, semi-human perverts who thought nothing of the sanctity of human life, they even sacrificed their own children. They were arrogant, God-haters who practiced every kind of wickedness under the guise of religion. The land needed to be cleansed and they had had their time.
Secondly, we need to remember who was master-minding the evil and who would go to any lengths to keep Israel out and thus thwart the plans of Almighty God. Of course, the same enemy that has played havoc with mankind since the beginning of time – the Satan. His demonic powers controlled these nations and it was men like David who drove them out and brought peace, prosperity and human dignity to a land that was eaten up by evil powers.
Thirdly, should we need to be reminded, the battle has not changed. Those same powers are at work on a world-wide scale today and the only opposition is the Church of Jesus Christ which is generally asleep or so engaged in theological tangles that it has neither the time or wit to challenge the real enemy. As the Satan’s pernicious powers are unleashed through the internet, media, occult and false religions, the whole world quakes with fear and God’s people cower behind their denominational safeguarding policies! Wake up church, it is time to pursue our enemies, to not turn back until they are destroyed, to crush them so they cannot rise, until they fall beneath our feet! Hallelujah.
