Psalm 18:35
God helps us!
And so back to the text!  As if to back up what has already been said, King David, writing around 1,000 BC, is able to identify the saving help of the Lord God as his shield. As he goes to the battlfield he knows that the Lord God of Israel is there beside him, to protect and guard him against the enemy. We need to stress this point again, there is no point in learning all about the armour of God unless we believe that He is with us. His armour has a lifetime guarantee and is the very best available, the Satan’s henchmen cannot break through it but unless we believe in the one who trains our hands and who stands beside us, it is useless. The Shield of Faith is called just that for a reason, it is faith alone that will allow us to press on, to defeat the enemy, to overcome all the obstacles and to one day rest in victory. Sunday School children used to be able to recite the armour of God but few of them would have known about the battle ahead. Faith, faith and yet more faith, growing faith, living faith and absolute faith are required before the conquest can be won.
So, what is this about the right hand of God sustains me?  The right hand of God is a reference to being very close to God the Father and it is also a position of power and influence beside Him. There are many Scriptures that portray Jesus the Messiah taking His place at the right hand of God where He reigns with His Father in universal power. David clearly felt an extraordinary sense of God’s empowerment and proximity as He went to war. As a consequence, he can only give the Lord God the glory for the greatness that his military successes had brought. Our heavenly Father will do the same for us if we are prepared to fight His way, using His tactics and trusting in His power.
