Psalm 18:31
Our God is an awesome God
In the previous verse, David seems to pick up a thought based on Deut 32:4 “Our God is the rock, His works are perfect, and all His ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is He.” I think he definitely has the same verse in mind here, “Who is the Rock except our God?” Earlier in the Psalm, in verse 2, we discovered that there is more than one word for rock and in this instance, David uses the “cliff” word.
Back to Deut 4:32-35 where Moses addresses the timelessness and power of God: - “Ask about the former days, from the day God created human beings. Ask from one end of the heavens to the other, has anything so great as this ever happened or has anything like it ever been heard of? Has any other people heard the voice of God speaking out of fire, as you have, and lived? Has any god ever tried to take for himself one nation out of another nation, by testings, by signs and wonders, by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, or by great and awesome deeds like all the things the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your very eyes? You were shown these things so that you might know that THE LORD IS GOD; BESIDES HIM THERE IS NO OTHER.”
So, Psalm 18:31, our verse for today, is making two statements rather than asking two questions; “For who is God besides the Lord?” “Who is the Rock-Cliff except our God?” These statements are taken from David’s memory of the great speeches of Moses to God’s people and they remain true – then and now! Our God is a rock. Our God is perfect. Our God is a just God. Our God is a faithful God. The Lord we worship is GOD. Nothing and no one compares with Him. We can trust Him. Hallelujah!
