Psalm 8:4
  What is man?
Now let us turn to the parallel Scripture in Hebrews 2:5-9. It is not to angels that He has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking.  But there is a place where someone has testified: “What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? You made him a little lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honour and put everything under his feet.” In putting everything under him, God left nothing that is not subject to him. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to him. But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honour because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

Having extolled the virtues of Christ who is far above the angels, the writer of Hebrews turns to the role and place of man in God’s scheme of things.   The context is the world to come, and the correct interpretation of this phrase is the inhabited earth.  We are not talking about heaven here, we are talking about the future of this planet and the future of humanity, and we are about to discover that instead of being doomed, an amazing future lies before us. As David pondered the wonder of creation; no doubt he had often gazed at the stars on a clear, moonlit night and been transfixed by the vast panorama of the heavenly canopy above him; “What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?”he asks God. If God is so powerful and mighty that his finger can inscribe such detail and beauty on the canvas of the heavens, what is a man in comparison? Why would such an immense being even think about men let alone care for them? As someone has said “Man is a rash on the epidermis of a minor planet!”  The vision of the night sky is meant to put us in our place. Physically speaking we are nothing and our time on this planet is very limited, we think we know a lot but in fact we know very little, science has pushed back many boundaries but for every question answered, a thousand more questions are uncovered!  What do we really know about this universe we live in? Because we don’t believe Genesis 1 we have spent billions of dollars to send men to the moon; that didn’t give us the answers so, at the time of writing, billions more have been spent on the Hadron Collider in Switzerland that scientists tell us will reveal what happened at the point the universe was created. It is a sign of the foolishness of this age and our ancestors will be left scratching their heads and pondering the purpose of such a machine – while they are building an even bigger one! All of this is deemed necessary because we choose not to believe in the Creator and in the compelling evidence for intelligent design.  David was so right when he wrote“What is man that you are mindful of him?”  There is a further question that we might ask the infinite, all powerful, all knowing God, “What is the son of man that you care for him?”  Does this almighty God think about mankind – why should He?  The phrase “son of man” occurs often in Scripture and is frequently used of Christ Himself who was the Son of God in His divinity and the Son of Man in His humanity.  “Son of man” means what it says, we are all descendants of one man, every human being is characterised by the original ancestor and in that sense we are all of one genealogy and one gene pool, we are sons of man.
Despite all our failings, and in many ways, our insignificance, Almighty God does care for us. He has shown us through Christ and we who are nothing, have been elevated to be like Him. Sons of Man can become Sons of God!  Hallelujah!
