Psalm 7:14-16   Reap what you sow
We have a saying that “crime does not pay!” These verses remind us that this is not a new concept, it was equally true 1,000 years BC because, of course, human nature never changes. The interesting parallel here is between the wrath and judgements of God described in verses 11-13 and the consequences of evil activity in these next few verses of the Psalm. It seems that David is making a link here, he is effectively saying that God’s judgement is present and immediate, that part of its outworking is in the lives of those who pursue evil. We prefer to think that God’s judgement is only future and that we can distance ourselves from it. What a fearful thing to see our fellow men suffering under judgement brought about their sinful actions but appropriated by a righteous, relentless God who “displays his wrath every day.” In this scenario wicked men and women, driven by their satanic master cause trouble, disillusionment, despair, falsehood and other negative consequences that entrap others and themselves. Such people fall into the very traps that they have dug for their fellow men. When the Scriptures tell us that trouble recoils on its perpetrators and violence comes upon the violent, who do we think brings this about? Is it just coincidence or is there a greater power of justice at work? The Psalm tells us just this, that God oversees justice here and now and those who pursue sinful ways had better watch out! Even in this life, before Almighty God, we reap what we sow
